Christian praying during spiritual battle – why people feel sleepy when praying (Matthew 26:41)

Why You Feel Sleepy When You Start Praying – Understanding the Spiritual Battle in Prayer

Do you suddenly feel sleepy when you start praying? Discover the spiritual battle behind prayer, what the Bible says about it, and how believers can overcome distractions through the power of Jesus Christ.

Have you ever experienced this?

You kneel down to pray.

You feel the desire in your heart to talk to God.

You want to thank Him for the day.

You want to give Him your worries.

You want to bring your requests before Him.

But suddenly something strange happens.

Your eyes become heavy.

Your mind becomes empty.

You forget what you wanted to pray.

Other thoughts begin entering your mind.

You may still be speaking, but your mind is no longer fully present in the prayer.

If you have experienced this before, you are not alone.

Many believers face this same struggle.

And there is often a deeper reason behind it.

Sometimes this is not only physical tiredness. It can also be part of a spiritual battle, because the enemy knows the power of prayer.

Bible Verse

“Watch and pray, that you enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

Matthew 26:41

Jesus Himself spoke these words to His disciples.

These words reveal something very important about prayer.

Our spirit may be ready to seek God, but sometimes our body becomes weak and tries to stop us.

Jesus Showed Us This Battle

The night before Jesus went to the cross, He went to pray.

He went to the Mount of Olives, a place where He often prayed.

But Jesus did something very important.

He did not go alone.

He took three disciples with Him:

  • Peter
  • James
  • John

Jesus asked them to watch with Him and pray.

This shows us something powerful.

Jesus knew that a very difficult moment was about to happen. Soldiers were going to arrest Him, and the disciples were about to face fear, confusion, and temptation.

Prayer would have prepared them for that moment.

Praying together would have strengthened them for what they were about to experience.

But the enemy did not want that to happen.

The Disciples Fell Asleep

Instead of praying, the disciples fell asleep.

The Bible tells us:

“When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow.”

— Luke 22:45

Their spirit wanted to pray.

But their bodies were weak.

Jesus repeated the warning again:

“Watch and pray, that you enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

— Matthew 26:41

This shows us that sometimes the body can fight against the spirit during prayer.

The Enemy Knows the Power of Prayer

The enemy understands something that many believers sometimes forget.

He knows that prayer is powerful.

Prayer brings strength.

Prayer brings direction.

Prayer brings protection.

Prayer invites God to intervene in situations.

That is why the enemy fights prayer so strongly.

Sometimes he fights through:

  • sleepiness
  • distractions
  • wandering thoughts
  • sudden tiredness

He tries to use the body against the spirit.

In the garden, the enemy knew the disciples were about to face a serious test.

Their prayers could have strengthened them for what was coming.

For example, Peter was about to face a moment of fear and pressure.

Later that same night, Peter denied Jesus three times.

Prayer could have strengthened him during that moment.

But the enemy tried to stop that preparation by making them sleep instead of pray.

The Same Battle Happens Today

Many believers experience the same thing today.

You decide to pray.

You begin speaking to God.

But suddenly:

  • your body becomes sleepy
  • your mind feels empty
  • distractions begin to enter your thoughts

Sometimes this happens because the enemy knows something you may not realize.

Sometimes you are very close to a breakthrough.

Or sometimes you are about to enter a difficult season, and the enemy does not want prayer to strengthen you before that moment arrives.

So he tries to interrupt the prayer.

Many believers ask questions like “Why do I feel sleepy when I pray?” or “Why does my mind wander during prayer?”

The Bible shows that this can be part of a spiritual battle, but through Jesus Christ believers can overcome distractions and grow stronger in prayer.

Jesus Continued Praying

Even though the disciples were sleeping, Jesus did not stop praying.

He continued seeking the Father.

And something powerful happened.

The Bible tells us:

An angel from heaven appeared to Him and strengthened Him.”

Luke 22:43

Heaven responded to prayer.

Strength came because Jesus continued praying.

Resist the Devil

The Bible gives believers a clear instruction:

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

James 4:7

When you continue praying even when your body feels weak…

When you continue praying even when distractions come…

You are resisting the devil.

And the Bible promises that when you resist him, he will flee.

Call Upon the Holy Spirit

Sometimes you may not know what to say in prayer.

Sometimes your words may feel few or simple.

But you can call upon the Holy Spirit.

You can pray simple prayers like:

“Holy Spirit, help me.”

“Lord, strengthen me.”

“Father, guide my prayer.”

Even those few words are powerful.

The Power of the Blood of Jesus

Remember the authority believers have in Jesus Christ.

The Bible says:

“They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony.”

— Revelation 12:11

The enemy cannot stand against the blood of Jesus.

The enemy cannot stand against the blood of Jesus during that battle that happens when you are praying.

When you feel that struggle, do not hesitate to call upon Jesus Christ.

Ask Him to cover you and your prayer with the blood that He shed on the cross.

Declare that the blood of Jesus seals that moment of prayer.

When you do that, the enemy cannot remain there.

The devil cannot stand where the blood of Jesus is being declared.

And I am telling you, the enemy will flee and fly away.

Final Encouragement

So when you feel sleepy during prayer…

When your mind becomes empty…

When distractions come…

Do not stop praying.

Fight to remain in prayer.

Call upon the Holy Spirit.

Stand in the authority of Jesus Christ.

Declare the power of the blood of Jesus.

Resist the devil.

And the Bible promises:

“Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

— James 4:7
