Have you ever gone through a trial and wondered, “God, why would You allow this to happen when I have never faced anything like it before?”
Many of us have asked that question.
When life becomes difficult, we naturally wonder why God would allow us to face situations we have never experienced. We pray, we seek answers, and sometimes we even feel that what we are going through is unfair.
Yet the Bible reveals that God often uses trials to mature us, strengthen our faith, and prepare us for what lies ahead.
–God’s Classroom Is Different
In a normal school, students learn the lesson first and take the test afterward. Teachers explain the chapter, answer questions, and only then give an exam to measure what the students have learned.
But God’s classroom of life often works differently.
Many times, the test comes before the lesson.
That does not mean God abandons us or enjoys watching us struggle. Rather, He uses those moments to draw us closer to Him and teach us things we could never fully learn through words alone.
This is why James wrote:
James 1:2–4 (KJV)
“My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.”
Notice that James does not say trials are meaningless. He tells us they produce something valuable. God is developing maturity, perseverance, and spiritual growth.
–A Teacher I Never Understood
I remember a teacher I had in high school.
Before teaching a new chapter, he would surprise us by giving us a test on that very chapter.
We had never studied it.
Most of us failed.
We hated his strategy.
Some of us even wondered whether it was fair to test students on something they had never been taught.
But then something happened.
After the test, he began teaching that same chapter.
This time, nobody was distracted.
Nobody ignored the lesson.
Everybody listened carefully because nobody wanted to fail again.
Ironically, those became the lessons we remembered the longest.
At the time, I did not understand why he taught that way.
Years later, God reminded me of that experience and helped me understand something about how He often teaches us through life’s trials.
–Why God Sometimes Allows the Trial Before the Lesson
When we are in the middle of a painful season, it is easy to think God is being unfair.
We may even pray:
“Lord, how could You allow me to go through something I’ve never faced before?”
Those feelings are real.
But after the trial, God begins to teach us.
He reveals where we needed to trust Him more.
He shows us strengths we never knew we had because He was developing them.
He teaches us dependence instead of self-reliance.
And because we have lived through the experience, those lessons remain with us for years.
Some truths are learned with the mind.
Others are learned through experience.
Very often, those are the lessons we never forget.
–God Never Allows More Than You Can Bear
Even while God teaches us through difficult seasons, He never abandons His children.
His Word gives us this promise.
1 Corinthians 10:13 (KJV)
“There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”
This verse reminds us that God knows our limits.
He never allows a trial beyond what, by His grace, we are able to endure.
Even when we cannot yet see the way forward, He has not stopped working.
–Your Trial May Become Someone Else’s Hope
One of the beautiful things about God’s classroom is that the lessons He teaches us are rarely meant for us alone.
The comfort He gives us becomes comfort we can share.
The wisdom He teaches us becomes wisdom we can pass on.
The faith He builds in us becomes encouragement for someone else who is walking through a similar trial.
Your greatest testimony may come from the season you once wished had never happened.
Final Thoughts
If you are walking through a trial today, do not lose heart.
You may not understand why God has allowed this season.
You may feel like the test came before the lesson.
But remember this:
God is still teaching.
God is still working.
God is still preparing you.
And one day, when you look back, you may discover that the hardest season of your life became the classroom where God taught you lessons that changed you forever.
Trust the greatest Teacher.
He never wastes a trial.
May God strengthen you, give you wisdom, and remind you that every trial in His hands has a purpose.
