Holiness is connection not restriction relationship with God Hebrews 12:14 Christian teaching about holiness and intimacy with God

Why Does God Feel So Strict? The Truth About Holiness, Freedom in Christ, and the Heart of God

(Many people ask, “why does God feel strict?”—even believers who truly want to follow Him.)

The Question We Carry—But Rarely Say Out Loud

There is something many of us carry…

but rarely put into words.

Even as believers.

We hear the Word of God.
We hear about holiness.
We hear the call to live right—to be set apart.

And over time, if we are honest…

it can begin to feel heavy.

Not because we do not want God—
but because we do not always understand Him.

And quietly, beneath the surface, a question begins to form:

Why does God feel so strict?
Why does it feel like there is no freedom in following Him?

We may not say it openly.

But we feel it.

And for some—especially those who are hearing the Word but have not yet fully stepped in—

that feeling can become even stronger.

It can begin to look like following God means restriction…
like walking under constant correction…
like serving a strict Father who is always saying
what to do—and what not to do.

And because of that…

some take a step back.

Not because they hate God,
but because they struggle to see the love behind what He is asking,
and because we sometimes struggle to understand what true freedom really is—
the freedom that is found in His salvation.

So the question remains:

Is God truly strict…
or have we misunderstood the heart behind His call?

If that question has ever crossed your mind—

then this message is for us.

The Weight of Holiness—Or the Misunderstanding of It

Many of us have grown familiar with this message:

Be holy.

We hear it in sermons.
We read it in Scripture.
We see it repeated again and again.

Holiness… holiness… holiness.

As it is written in 1 Peter 1:16 (NIV):

“for it is written: ‘Be holy, because I am holy.’”

And yet, somewhere along the way, something can shift.

What was meant to draw us closer
can begin to feel like pressure.

It can start to sound like a constant demand:

Be right.
Do right.
Live right.

And slowly, without realizing it,
we begin to interpret holiness not as an invitation—

but as a burden.

It begins to feel similar to growing up under a father
who always wants everything done perfectly.

And as children, we know how that feels.

It can become exhausting.
It can feel demanding.
It can even feel misunderstood.

And so, the same thought appears again—
this time directed toward God:

Why is He asking so much?
Why does it feel like this is never enough?

The Illustration We All Understand

If you have ever been in a strict environment—
a boarding school, a disciplined home, a structured system—

you already understand this dynamic.

There was always that one figure—

the one who insisted on order.

They corrected how you dressed.
They corrected how you spoke.
They corrected how you carried yourself.

Everything had to be right.

And at the time, they were often the least liked.

But there was also the opposite—

the one who did not correct,
who allowed anything,
who let things slide.

And naturally, that felt easier.
It felt like freedom.

But maturity reveals something deeper:

The one who did not correct
was not protecting you.

They were allowing you to drift.

While the one who insisted on what was right—

was the one who cared enough
to shape your future.

The Nature of Real Love

Real love does not ignore what is wrong.

Real love corrects.

Real love intervenes.

Real love cares about who you are becoming—
not just how comfortable you feel.

And this is where many of us misunderstand God.

Holiness Is Not Pressure—It Is Connection

God does not call us to holiness because He is demanding.

He calls us to holiness because He is relational.

Holiness is not control.

Holiness is connection.

It is the place where relationship becomes clear,
where communication becomes open,
where intimacy with God becomes real.

Without it, there is distance.

There is interference.

There is disconnection.

As it is written in Hebrews 12:14 (NIV):

Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.”

The Misunderstood Meaning of Freedom

Here is where the confusion often lives.

We tend to define freedom as the ability to do anything.

But true freedom is deeper than that.

True freedom is not found in doing everything we want.

It is found in living in what is right.

What looks like restriction
is often protection.

What feels like limitation
is often direction.

What we interpret as control
is often God preserving what matters most—
our relationship with Him.

The Turning Point: God Made a Way

God saw what we could not fix on our own.

Not through effort.
Not through discipline.
Not through willpower.

So instead of lowering His standard—

He made a way to raise us.

As it is written in John 3:16 (NIV):

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

Through Jesus Christ, we are cleansed.

We are restored.

We are brought back into relationship.

Again and again.

Not because we are perfect—
but because He made a way.

The Final Truth

God does not speak about holiness because He is strict.

He speaks about holiness
because He refuses to lose the relationship.

Everything He asks
is rooted in love.

Everything He calls us to
is for connection.

That is why we pursue holiness.

Not out of fear.
Not out of pressure.

But because it keeps us connected
to our Father.

A Call to Stay on the Path — and a Call to Begin

So where do we go from here?

We do our best to stay on track.

We make the decision, daily, to pursue holiness—
not perfectly,
but faithfully.

Not in our own strength,
but in the strength that God provides.

Because the truth is, we cannot do this on our own.

But we are not alone.

We have Jesus Christ—
whose blood continually washes us, restores us, and brings us back into alignment with God.

And we have the Holy Spirit—
who leads us, strengthens us, corrects us, and enables us to walk in the life God is calling us to live.

This is not a journey of pressure.

It is a journey of relationship.

A journey of growth.

A journey of walking, step by step, closer to the heart of the Father.

So let us stay on that path.

Let us not drift.

Let us not give up.

For the One Who Has Not Yet Begun

If you are reading this and you have not yet received Jesus Christ—

this is your moment.

God desires a relationship with you.

Not distant.
Not formal.

Real. Personal. Living.

He desired it so deeply
that He gave His own Son for it.

Jesus Christ came to restore you—
to bring you back to the Father.

And today, you can respond.

You can receive Him as your Savior and your King.

And I say this with sincerity:

It will be one of the greatest decisions you will ever make.

You can simply say:

“Lord Jesus,
I receive You into my life.
I accept You as my Savior and my King.
Forgive me, cleanse me, and lead me.
From today, I choose to follow You.”

And from that moment—
everything begins to change.
